Performance Issue in HANA

I first heard of HANA in 2012 and some of you may have heard even before that. It was in SAP Teched and HANA was presented as a solution which is 100,000 (although presenters put that to be safe we assume it is only 10,000) times faster than the current database. I was amazed by this comparison and quickly calculated something which takes hours to run, can now be done in seconds.

I was wrong. I was wrong on two accounts. First, I didn’t understand what the speed meant (thanks to the presenter), and also it depends on the way program is written.

Before I go further, what was your first experience with HANA. Was it fast enough to sweep you away or was it a complete dud or may somewhere in between. Do let me know in the comments.

If we divide the transactions/actions in two categories – One where are posting document and other where we are running analytics on the data – HANA is going to much more beneficial for the later.

Second, if you experiencing performance issue with HANA, look for data exchanges between the database and the frontend layer. ABAPer who are older than HANA are probably making mistakes here.

Third and most important – is the program optimized with new syntaxes and new capabilities which can make use of the in-memory calculation in HANA DB layer.

May be there is more – feel free to add your thoughts are comments.

We will continue this journey with Performance check tools and recommendation for improving the performance in future blogs. Stay with us.
